Joris's Journey in AAPS: An Alumni Profile

Joris is a life cycle assessment (LCA) specialist on a mission to secure a future that is environmentally sustainable, socially just, and economically thriving. His PhD focussed on advancing LCA methods to explore future environmental impacts of batteries and passenger vehicles. Joris has published articles in world-class journals, presented at international conferences, and has engaged in policy, such as contributing to the UK's Seventh Carbon Budget with the Climate Change Committee. He is also an accredited practitioner (PIEMA, REnvP) with the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment and Society of the Environment, having consulted and advised several organisations across energy technologies, consumer goods, construction and software. Beyond his work, Joris is an advocate for physical and mental health and enjoys triathlon, martial arts, and mindfulness while also leading a plant-based lifestyle.

PhD Focus

Joris's PhD title was "Future carbon footprints of batteries and passenger cars: Prospective life cycle assessment using climate mitigation pathways from integrated assessment models". It utilised a methodology called "Prospective" LCA (pLCA) that applied decarbonisation pathways from integrated assessment models (IAM) to LCA databases. This unlocks the ability to project future impacts of key low-carbon technologies such as lithium-ion batteries and passenger cars to see which solutions led to the most sustainable futures.

Looking Forward

Since completing his PhD, Joris has started as a Senior Sustainability Consultant at Minviro, providing LCA solutions and environmental insights to world-leading organisations in raw materials and energy technologies. Joris' ambition is to lead efforts in making LCA a tangible decision-making tool to help a low-carbon future be sustainable.

Reflection on AAPS

For Joris, AAPS has meant innovation and technology with people, planet, and prosperity at the heart. In AAPS Joris had access to great resources and support for transport technologies, along with exposure to various fields like engineering, policy, and social sciences. This depth and breadth of experience has prepared me to tackle diverse future challenges. Joris valued the incredible people he met from various disciplines, which has given me new perspectives on tackling challenges in transport.
